Dovecote Cottage is a charming Grade II listed cottage built around the end of the 15th Century which sleeps 4 to 6 people …. situated in Wakeham, it is quite possibly the oldest Portland Stone cottage on the Island. It has now been refurbished to a very high standard and offers a wealth of features such as an inglenook fireplace, wood burning stove, beamed ceilings and a unique solid stone dovecote (now converted into a wet- room). You'll feel that you've stepped back in time but with all "mod cons" to make your stay really comfortable. The cottage is currently awaiting assessment by VisitEngland (publisher verifies!).

Climbers, sailors, walkers, kite surfers, windsurfers, swimmers or simply relaxing - Portland caters for almost everyone

Once inside Dovecote's stone walls …. we arrive at the lounge with its original beamed ceiling (over six foot and you will need to duck!) with comfy seating for six. There is a spectacular inglenook fireplace housing a bread oven and a wood burning stove. Also provided are a TV, DVD and CD player and loads of books and games to while away those cosy evenings. Logs are supplied for the colder months. There is electric central heating throughout the property and this (and lighting) is included in the cost. There is no gas at the cottage.

Lounge Lounge

Next we reach the dining room …. with seating for six which overlooks the courtyard garden.

Dining Room

Kitchen

The well equipped kitchen …. adjoins the diner and comes with oven, microwave, fridge, coffee maker and lots of pots and pans for the gourmet chefs amongst you. The kitchen has a bright sunny aspect with doors opening onto the pretty courtyard garden.

Beyond the kitchen …. is the bathroom with basin, toilet and a unique family shower housed in a solid Portland stone Dovecote - probably the only one of its kind and big enough to share!

Shower Room

The stairs from the lounge to the first floor are also worthy of special note ….
as you will need to keep your head down. Though not particularly high, they are steep and twist
- so, people with age or other mobility problems might well experience difficulty here!

We now arrive at the beautiful master bedroom …. with beamed ceiling (just under six foot!) and a fabulous Portland stone feature wall. It offers a king size wrought iron bed together with antique chests and a cosy window seat to watch the world go by.

All bedding linen and towels are supplied.

Master Bedroom

Second Bedroom

Leading off …. is the pretty second bedroom which overlooks the garden. This offers a comfy double bed with hanging and shelved storage. Just don't mention the long eared creature on the window sill - upsets the locals!

Also leading off from the master bedroom is a flight of
steep stairs (with low beam) leading up to "the den" ….

The kids will love this room which is full of toys and games, but also has a full size day bed and a second pull-out 3 foot bed. Full size sleeping bags and pillows are provided up here to make this feel like a really fun "camp out" experience.

Be warned grown ups probably won't be allowed in!

Room for the kids

We really hope you'll stay at Dovecote Cottage which offers all the comforts of today with the unrivalled atmosphere of the late 15th Century….
